Privacy Policy

Safe Check App ("Safe Check," "we," "us," or "our") provides a mobile application that lets you share your last known location with people you trust. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and protect information when you use our app and website at safecheck.me.

By using Safe Check App, you agree to this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the app.

1. Information we collect

Account information

  • Username you choose
  • Anonymous account identifier and cryptographic public keys
  • Recovery key material (stored on your device; we do not store your recovery phrase in plain text)

Location information

  • GPS coordinates, timestamp, and accuracy when you update location or enable background sharing
  • Location history stored on your device according to your retention settings
  • Encrypted location payloads transmitted to our servers for delivery to your approved viewers

Connection and activity data

  • Trust relationships (who you share with and who can view you)
  • Invite and connection requests
  • Activity events such as location views and history access

Device and technical data

  • Device type, operating system, and app version
  • Push notification tokens (FCM/APNs) for alerts you opt into
  • Diagnostic logs for app stability (no location content in crash logs)

2. How we use information

  • Provide location sharing between you and your approved contacts
  • Encrypt and deliver location updates to authorized viewers
  • Send push notifications for trust requests and safety alerts you enable
  • Maintain account recovery and connection management
  • Improve app reliability and security
  • Comply with legal obligations

We do not sell your personal information or use your location for advertising.

3. How sharing works

Location data is encrypted on your device before transmission. Only users you explicitly approve can request decryption keys to view your shared location. Sharing is invite-based and can be revoked at any time. Viewers may see your latest location and, if permitted, your on-device history that you have chosen to sync.

4. Data storage and retention

  • On your device: Latest location and optional history are stored locally. You control history retention in Settings.
  • On our servers: Encrypted location blobs, account metadata, and connection records are stored on secure cloud infrastructure (Supabase).
  • Retention: Server-side encrypted payloads are retained while your account is active and sharing is enabled. You may delete local history at any time. Account deletion requests remove associated server data within 30 days.

5. Third-party services

We use trusted processors to operate the app:

  • Supabase — authentication, database, and backend functions
  • Google Firebase Cloud Messaging — push notifications
  • Google Maps — map display in the app (subject to Google's terms)
  • Apple / Google — app distribution and platform services

These providers process data only as needed to deliver their services to us.

6. Your rights and choices

  • Enable or disable background location sharing
  • Revoke any connection's access to your location
  • Configure history retention or turn history off
  • Opt out of non-essential push notifications in device settings
  • Request access, correction, or deletion of your data by contacting us

Depending on your region (including GDPR and CCPA), you may have additional rights to access, port, or delete personal data. Contact us to exercise these rights.

7. Children's privacy

Safe Check App is not directed at children under 13 (or 16 in the EEA). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us data, contact us and we will delete it.

8. Security

We use industry-standard encryption (including XChaCha20-Poly1305 for location payloads), TLS for data in transit, and access controls on our infrastructure. No method of transmission is 100% secure; we encourage you to protect your recovery key and device passcode.

9. International transfers

Your information may be processed in countries other than your own where our service providers operate. We ensure appropriate safeguards for cross-border transfers where required by law.

10. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will post the revised policy on this page and update the "Last updated" date. Continued use after changes constitutes acceptance.
